The Founder's Story
I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the fall of 1996. Friends and family surrounded me with their love, support, and prayers. One particular gift of love, a quilted comforter, was of special comfort to me. Whenever I was wrapped in it I felt as though I was wrapped in the loving arms of my Savior God, my Comforter, the source of all comfort.
In the summer of 2002, I learned that a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. According to God’s timing, the words of 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 prompted me to consider sharing my comforter. God’s compassion and comfort given to me in such a tangible way moved me to hold out God’s compassion and gift of comfort to another. She, too, would be wrapped in the love of the Comforter as I had been.
When another friend was diagnosed with cancer the ache in my heart for her led me to think and pray more about this spiritual tie between a comforter made of human hands and the work of the Holy Spirit as Comforter/Counselor. I felt the Lord leading me to start the Comforter Ministry.
My desire was that this ministry would also serve as a mission endeavor through the journal that accompanies each comforter. The journal shares the gospel message of our Savior Jesus Christ, and the love, peace, and comfort that belong to those who believe in Him. I am praying that this ministry and mission endeavor will continue to be a blessing to many in the future as it has been these past 18 years.
Once again, according to God’s timing and in answer to prayer, new leadership is in place. It is my joy and privilege to introduce the Comforter Ministry Team—Mary Venus, with the assistance of Judy Anderson, and Christine Herrmann. All three women are Christian quilters and members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
We trust in God’s plans and purposes to continue to bless this ministry of love and compassion, reaching out to women with cancer with God’s Word and the love of the Comforter through journals and quilts.
